The Artwork
The Death of Sardanapalus is a monumental painting depicting the final moments of Sardanapalus, the legendary king of Assyria. Facing the imminent collapse of his empire, the ruler remains motionless on his bed while ordering the destruction of his treasures, horses and court rather than allowing them to fall into enemy hands. Delacroix fills the scene with bodies, precious fabrics, gold, violence and movement. The king’s detached stillness contrasts sharply with the chaos unfolding around him, creating a powerful image of absolute power, excess and self-destruction. More than the death of a ruler, the painting represents the final spectacle of an empire consumed by its own decadence.
